Island Harvest is the first charity I ever worked with. They are a local food bank for Ling Island that was founded in 1992. Island Harvest Food Bank is a member of Feeding America which is the nation’s largest hung relief organization. Island Harvest distributes fresh produce, meat and non-perishables throughout Long Island. The founder is Lina Breitstone. Linda started Island Harvest out of the back of her station wagon with a cooler filled with food. She was inspired to start Island Harvest when she saw one particular convenience store throwing away food at the end of the day when there was a safe house for women and children right down the street. The mission of Island Harvest is “to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.” Island Harvest is now Long Island’s largest hunger-relief organization.
